Indications
Eyebet is designed for the short-term management of steroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the eye, following the exclusion of bacterial, viral, or fungal infections. It is also suitable for non-infectious inflammatory conditions affecting the ear or nose.
Pharmacology
Corticosteroids, such as Eyebet, bind to glucocorticoid receptors, effectively suppressing pro-inflammatory signals while enhancing anti-inflammatory responses. Betamethasone phosphate is characterized by a brief duration of action, as it is swiftly converted to betamethasone. Corticosteroids possess a broad therapeutic range, allowing for doses that significantly exceed the body’s natural production. Patients using corticosteroids should be informed about potential risks, including hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression and an increased likelihood of infections.
Dosage & Administration
- Eye: Instill 1 or 2 drops in each affected eye every 1 to 2 hours until symptoms are controlled, then reduce frequency as needed.
- Ear: Administer 2 or 3 drops in each affected ear every 2 to 3 hours until control is achieved, then adjust the frequency accordingly.
- Nose: Place 2 or 3 drops in each nostril 2 to 3 times daily.
Always use as directed by your physician.
Interactions
Specific studies on drug interactions have not been performed for Eyebet.
Side Effects
Possible hypersensitivity reactions include irritation, burning, stinging, itching, and dermatitis. The use of topical corticosteroids may lead to corneal ulceration, elevated intraocular pressure that could harm the optic nerve, and diminished visual acuity. Prolonged or intensive topical use may result in posterior subcapsular cataracts. In conditions involving corneal or scleral thinning, corticosteroid therapy could increase the risk of globe thinning and perforation. Mydriasis, ptosis, and epithelial punctate keratitis have also been observed with ophthalmic corticosteroid use.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There is insufficient data from controlled studies regarding the use of Eyebet in pregnant women. It is advisable to avoid extensive use during pregnancy. There is no information available on whether the medication is excreted in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings
Topical corticosteroids should not be administered for undiagnosed red eye conditions. Ophthalmic corticosteroid treatments require regular assessment to monitor for potential complications such as elevated intraocular pressure, cataract development, or undetected infections.
Overdose Effects
Prolonged intensive topical use may result in systemic effects.
