Indications

Abdolax is recommended for the following conditions:

• Constipation from any cause
• Relief from persistent and recurrent constipation
• Preparation for bowel clearance prior to surgical procedures, childbirth, or radiological examinations.

Pharmacology

Sodium Picosulfate is a stimulant laxative belonging to the triarylmethane class. Upon oral intake, it is activated by colonic bacteria, exerting its effects locally within the colon. The active compound stimulates the nerve endings in the intestinal wall, enhancing colonic peristalsis and promoting water and electrolyte accumulation in the colonic lumen. This action facilitates defecation, shortens transit time, and softens stools. Rectal stimulation may enhance motility and create a sensation of rectal fullness, aiding in the natural urge to defecate.

Dosage & Administration

Abdolax is for oral use. It is advisable to take the following dosages at night to achieve a bowel movement the following morning. Start with the lowest effective dose, which can be gradually increased to the maximum recommended amount for consistent stool regularity. Do not exceed the maximum daily dosage:

10 mg Tablet Dosage:

• Adults and children over 10 years: 5-10 mg per day.
• Children aged 4-10 years: 2.5-5 mg per day.

Oral Solution (5 mg/5 ml) Dosage:

• Adults and children over 10 years: 5-10 ml (1 to 2 teaspoonfuls) per day.
• Children aged 4-10 years: 2.5-5 ml (½ to 1 teaspoonful) per day.
• Children from 1 month to 4 years: 0.25 ml/kg body weight per day.

Concentrated Oral Solution (7.5 mg/ml) Dosage:

• Adults and children over 10 years: 0.67-1.33 ml per day.
• Children aged 4-10 years: 0.33-0.67 ml per day.

Interactions

Concurrent use of diuretics or corticosteroids may heighten the risk of electrolyte imbalances when taken in excess. Additionally, antibiotics may diminish the laxative effects of Abdolax.

Contraindications

Do not use Abdolax if you have:

• Ileus or intestinal obstruction
• Severe abdominal pain or feverish conditions (e.g., appendicitis) that may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting
• Acute inflammatory bowel diseases
• Severe dehydration
• Known hypersensitivity to Sodium Picosulfate or any other ingredients in the product.

Side Effects

Potential side effects may include:

• Allergic reactions
• Dizziness
• Fainting
• Gastrointestinal issues (e.g., diarrhea, abdominal pain, cramps)
• Nausea and vomiting.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Clinical studies have not reported harmful effects on pregnancy or fetal development associated with this product. However, it is recommended to avoid use during the first trimester. Sodium Picosulfate and its glucuronides are not excreted in the breast milk of healthy lactating women.

Precautions & Warnings

Excessive long-term use may result in fluid and electrolyte imbalances, including hypokalemia. Caution is advised for individuals with a history of alcoholism, pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, and those in high-risk groups such as patients with liver disease or epilepsy.

Overdose Effects

Chronic overdosage of laxatives may lead to issues such as prolonged diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, hypokalemia, secondary hyperaldosteronism, renal calculi, renal tubular damage, metabolic alkalosis, and muscle weakness due to low potassium levels.
