Indications for Alergix MR
Alergix MR is used to relieve the symptoms of:
- Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
- Perennial allergic rhinitis
- Urticaria (hives)
Note: Always use Alergix MR as directed by a registered healthcare provider.
Pharmacology of Alergix MR
Alergix MR contains Mizolastine, a non-sedating antihistamine that works by blocking H1 histamine receptors in the gastrointestinal tract, blood vessels, and respiratory system. In addition to its antihistamine action, Mizolastine has mast-cell stabilizing properties, which help control allergic reactions. Unlike many other antihistamines, it does not cause sedation, making it a preferred choice for many patients.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and children over 12 years: The recommended dose is one 10 mg tablet daily.
- Children under 12 years: Not recommended.
Always follow the instructions of your healthcare provider for the proper dosage.
Drug Interactions
- Ketoconazole, Erythromycin, and certain antiarrhythmic drugs (e.g., Amiodarone) may increase the plasma concentration of Alergix MR, which could elevate the risk of arrhythmias.
- Ciclosporin and other potent cytochrome P450 3A4 inhibitors should be used cautiously alongside Alergix MR.
- No significant potentiation of sedation or performance issues have been observed when consuming alcohol with Alergix MR.
Contraindications
Alergix MR is contraindicated in patients who:
- Have cardiac diseases or a history of arrhythmias, including those with QT prolongation or electrolyte imbalances (especially hypokalemia).
- Have severe liver impairment.
- Are hypersensitive to Mizolastine or any of its components.
Side Effects
Alergix MR is generally well tolerated when taken as directed. Possible side effects may include:
- Dry mouth, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, and hypotension.
- Raised liver enzymes, tachycardia, and palpitations may also occur in some cases.
- Rarely, bronchospasm or worsening of asthma may be reported, though the cause is uncertain due to the high incidence of asthma in patients treated for allergies.
If you experience any of these side effects, consult your healthcare provider.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy: The safety of Mizolastine during pregnancy has not been fully established. It is advised to avoid Alergix MR during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester.
- Lactation: Mizolastine is excreted in breast milk, so it is not recommended for use during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
- Sedation: A small number of individuals may experience mild sedation when using Alergix MR. It is recommended to assess your personal response to the medication before engaging in activities like driving or operating machinery.
Overdose Effects
In the event of an overdose, general symptomatic care is recommended, including cardiac monitoring for at least 24 hours. Studies in patients with renal insufficiency suggest that hemodialysis does not significantly increase the clearance of the drug.
Therapeutic Class
- Alergix MR is classified as a non-sedating antihistamine, used primarily for treating allergic reactions without causing drowsiness.
Storage Conditions
- Store Alergix MR in a cool, dry place, away from light.
- Keep out of reach of children.
