Indications
Xyotil is indicated for the management of hypertension. It can be prescribed alone or in conjunction with other antihypertensive medications.
- Always follow the advice of a registered healthcare professional when using this medication.
Pharmacology
Xyotil contains Olmesartan, which functions by blocking the effects of angiotensin II, a key hormone in the renin-angiotensin system that contributes to blood vessel constriction and increased blood pressure. By selectively inhibiting the AT1 receptor in vascular smooth muscle, Olmesartan promotes vasodilation and reduces blood pressure. This medication does not inhibit ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme), thus maintaining bradykinin response and preventing an increase in angiotensin II levels that could counteract its antihypertensive effects.
Dosage & Administration
Dosage should be tailored to the individual patient. The typical starting dose of Olmesartan is 20 mg once daily for those not volume-contracted. If further blood pressure reduction is needed after two weeks, the dose may be increased to 40 mg, with a maximum recommended dose of 40 mg daily. Olmesartan can be taken with or without food.
- Pediatric safety and efficacy have not been established.
- Consult a healthcare professional for proper dosage and guidance.
Interaction
Xyotil has shown no significant interactions with digoxin or warfarin. It is not metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system, minimizing the risk of interactions with other drugs. However, co-administration with NSAIDs may impair renal function in susceptible individuals. Regular monitoring of renal function is advisable.
Contraindications
Xyotil should not be used in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any of its components.
Side Effects
In clinical trials involving over 3,800 patients, Xyotil was generally well tolerated, with an adverse reaction profile similar to placebo. Common side effects included dizziness (3% incidence), and less common effects like back pain, diarrhea, headache, and respiratory issues. The withdrawal rate due to side effects was low.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Xyotil should be discontinued as soon as pregnancy is confirmed, particularly during the second and third trimesters, due to potential harm to the fetus. It is unclear if Olmesartan is excreted in human breast milk, so a decision should be made regarding breastfeeding if the drug is required.
Precautions & Warnings
Patients with renal impairment or severe heart failure may experience changes in kidney function when treated with Xyotil. Close monitoring is recommended to prevent serious complications.
Overdose Effects
While there are no documented cases of Xyotil overdose, symptoms may include hypotension and tachycardia. If overdose is suspected, seek immediate medical attention and consider supportive care.
Therapeutic Class
Angiotensin II receptor blocker.
