Indications
Askorel SR is indicated for the relief of dry (non-productive) cough, often stemming from recent viral infections. It is also effective for pre- and post-operative cough sedation in patients undergoing surgical procedures and bronchoscopy. Additionally, it can be utilized for acute cough of any origin, whooping cough, and cough related to lower respiratory tract infections such as tracheitis, laryngitis, and bronchitis.
Pharmacology
Butamirate Citrate targets the cough center in the brain to effectively suppress coughing. Unlike opium alkaloids, Butamirate Citrate is safe and non-sedating. It is rapidly absorbed after oral intake, reaching peak concentration within 9 hours when taken as a sustained-release tablet. It is highly protein-bound, with a plasma elimination half-life of approximately 13 hours. The active metabolites also possess antitussive properties.

Interaction
Avoid concomitant use with expectorants.
Contraindications
Do not use if there is hypersensitivity to the active ingredient.
Side Effects
Askorel SR is generally well tolerated. Rare adverse reactions may include rash, nausea, diarrhea, and vertigo, which typically resolve upon dose adjustment or discontinuation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Butamirate Citrate is not recommended during the first trimester. It may be used later in pregnancy if prescribed by a physician, but caution is advised.
Lactation: Due to insufficient data on the excretion of the active ingredient in breast milk, the risks and benefits should be carefully evaluated before use during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
As Askorel SR suppresses the cough reflex, avoid using it alongside expectorants to prevent mucus retention, which may lead to bronchospasm and respiratory infections. Consult a doctor if cough persists for more than 7 days (or more than 3 days in children under 12).
Overdose Effects
In case of accidental overdose, symptoms may include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, and hypotension. Standard emergency protocols should be followed, including activated charcoal and saline laxatives, along with standard cardio-respiratory resuscitation if necessary.
