- Productive Cough: Effective relief for cough associated with mucus production.
- Inflammatory Disorders: Addresses both acute and chronic inflammatory conditions affecting the upper and lower respiratory tracts, particularly those involving thick mucus, including bronchitis.

Always consult a registered healthcare professional before use.
Pharmacology
Ambolyt contains ambroxol, an active metabolite of bromhexine, which is known to have a superior bronchosecretolytic effect compared to its predecessor. Ambroxol enhances sputum rheology through a hydration mechanism, leading to the liquefaction of mucus within the respiratory tract. This action facilitates easier expectoration and alleviates dyspnea. It also promotes the production of surfactant phospholipids by alveolar cells, reducing superficial tension in the alveoli and mitigating bronchial hyperactivity. Additionally, ambroxol exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the production of cellular cytokines and metabolites of arachidonic acid, making it beneficial for patients with COPD by traditionally improving airway patency.
Dosage & Administration
The recommended daily dosage (ideally after meals) is as follows:
Pediatric Drops:
- 0-6 months: 0.5 ml, twice daily.
- 6-12 months: 1 ml, twice daily.
- 1-2 years: 1.25 ml, twice daily.
Syrup:
- 2-5 years: 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoon), 2-3 times daily.
- 5-10 years: 5 ml (1 teaspoon), 2-3 times daily.
- 10 years and adults: 10 ml (2 teaspoons), three times daily.
Sustained Release Capsule: For adults and children over 12 years: 1 capsule daily.
Always consult a registered healthcare professional before use.
Interactions
Ambolyt should not be used concurrently with antitussives (e.g., codeine) as the liquefied phlegm may not be effectively expectorated.
Contraindications
Ambolyt is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to ambroxol or bromhexine.
Side Effects
Occasional gastrointestinal side effects, such as epigastric pain and a sensation of stomach fullness, may occur. Rarely, allergic reactions like skin eruptions, urticaria, or angioedema have been reported.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Teratogenic and fetal toxicity studies have indicated no harmful effects from ambroxol. However, it is advised to avoid use during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. The safety of ambroxol during lactation has not yet been established.
Precautions & Warnings
Ambolyt should be administered cautiously in patients with gastric or duodenal ulcers and those with convulsive disorders. Individuals with hepatic or renal insufficiency should also use this medication with caution.
Therapeutic Class
Cough expectorants & mucolytics.
