Description

Indications

Algicid is used to alleviate symptoms caused by the reflux of acid, bile, and pepsin into the esophagus. This includes issues such as acid regurgitation, heartburn, and indigestion, which may arise after gastric surgery, due to a hiatus hernia, during pregnancy, or alongside reflux esophagitis. Additionally, it addresses symptoms related to laryngopharyngeal reflux, including hoarseness, voice disorders, sore throats, and coughing. Algicid is also effective for managing gastroesophageal reflux symptoms while undergoing or after stopping acid-suppressing therapy.

Use only as directed by a registered healthcare professional.

Pharmacology

Algicid combines Sodium Alginate and Potassium Bicarbonate. Sodium Alginate, a naturally occurring substance, interacts with stomach acid to form a gel. Potassium Bicarbonate reacts with the acid to produce carbon dioxide bubbles. These bubbles become trapped in the Sodium Alginate gel, creating a raft that floats on top of the stomach contents. This raft acts as a barrier, preventing acid from backing up into the esophagus and alleviating heartburn symptoms. The action is physical, not reliant on absorption into the bloodstream. The raft can last for up to 4 hours before being broken down in the digestive tract and excreted.

Contraindications

Algicid is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to Sodium Alginate or Potassium Bicarbonate.

Side Effects

While Algicid is effective, some users may experience side effects such as nausea, constipation, diarrhea, or headaches. In cases of excessive dosage, a feeling of bloating may occur, and it’s advisable to consult a physician.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Sodium Alginate and Potassium Bicarbonate can be safely used during pregnancy when clinically necessary. There are no known adverse effects on breastfeeding infants, so it is considered safe for use during lactation.

Precautions & Warnings

Caution is advised when prescribing this combination to patients with renal impairment or congestive heart failure. Care should also be taken for those with hypercalcemia, nephrocalcinosis, or recurrent calcium-containing kidney stones. Reduced efficacy may occur in patients with very low gastric acid levels.
