Description

Indications

Adora is indicated for treating upper respiratory tract infections, including pharyngitis and tonsillitis, caused by Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is also effective for urinary tract infections caused by E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Klebsiella species, as well as skin and soft tissue infections from Staphylococci (including penicillinase-producing strains) and Streptococci.

Description

Adora is an acid-stable, semi-synthetic oral cephalosporin that is rapidly absorbed after oral administration. A 1 g dose maintains antibiotic concentration in the urine well above the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for susceptible urinary pathogens for approximately 20 to 22 hours.

Pharmacology

Cefadroxil works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to one or more penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), disrupting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, which halts cell wall assembly and leads to bacterial cell death.

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults:
    • Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis: 1 g daily in one or two doses.
    • Urinary Tract Infections: 1-2 g daily in one or two doses.
    • Skin Infections: 1 g daily in one or two doses.
  • Children: 30 mg/kg daily, divided into doses every 12 hours.

Adora can be taken with or without food; taking it with meals may help reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.

Interactions

Adora has no significant drug interactions with other medications.

Contraindications

Cefadroxil should not be used in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to cefadroxil or any of its components.

Side Effects

Adora is generally well tolerated, though common side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances and hypersensitivity reactions.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Cefadroxil is classified as FDA pregnancy category B. Although no adequate human studies are available, it should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Cefadroxil is excreted in breast milk; caution is advised when administering it during lactation.

Precautions & Warnings

Use of Adora may lead to pseudomembranous colitis; therefore, caution is warranted in patients who experience diarrhea while on this therapy.
