Description

Indications

Buratuss is an effective treatment for alleviating dry, non-productive coughs, often resulting from viral infections. It is also used to manage coughs before and after surgical procedures, including bronchoscopy. Additionally, Buratuss can address acute coughs of various origins, whooping cough, and coughs related to acute lower respiratory tract infections, such as tracheitis, laryngitis, and bronchitis.

Pharmacology

Buratuss contains Butamirate Citrate, which targets the brain’s cough center to effectively suppress coughing. Unlike opium alkaloids, Butamirate Citrate is safe, non-sedating, and has no chemical or pharmacological relation to them. After oral administration, Butamirate Citrate is rapidly absorbed, reaching peak levels within 9 hours when using the sustained-release tablet form. It is highly protein-bound, with a plasma half-life of approximately 13 hours. Its active metabolites also contribute to its antitussive effects.

Dosage & Administration

For Adults:

  • Butamirate Citrate 50 mg Tablets: Take 2-3 tablets daily.
  • Butamirate Citrate Syrup: Take 15 ml four times daily.

For Children & Adolescents:

  • Butamirate Citrate 50 mg Tablets:
    • Adolescents Over 12 Years: 1-2 tablets daily.
  • Butamirate Citrate Syrup:
    • Children (3-6 Years): 5 ml three times daily.
    • Children (6-12 Years): 10 ml three times daily.
    • Adolescents: 15 ml three times daily.
  • Butamirate Citrate Pediatric Drops:
    • Children (2 Months – 1 Year): 0.50 ml four times daily.
    • Children (1-3 Years): 0.75 ml four times daily.

Interactions

Avoid using Buratuss in conjunction with expectorants, as this may lead to mucus retention in the airways, increasing the risk of bronchospasm and respiratory infections.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are hypersensitive to Butamirate Citrate.

Side Effects

Buratuss is generally well-tolerated. In rare cases, side effects such as rash, nausea, diarrhea, and vertigo may occur, typically resolving with dose adjustment or discontinuation of the medication.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Butamirate Citrate should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy. It may be used later in pregnancy if deemed necessary by a physician, but with caution. For breastfeeding mothers, the decision to use Butamirate Citrate should weigh the potential benefits against possible risks due to insufficient data on its presence in breast milk.

Precautions & Warnings

Since Buratuss suppresses the cough reflex, avoid using it alongside expectorants to prevent mucus buildup in the airways. Consult a doctor if cough persists beyond 7 days (or 3 days for children under 12).

Overdose Effects

In case of accidental overdose, symptoms may include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, and hypotension. Follow standard emergency procedures such as administering activated charcoal and saline laxatives, and performing cardio-respiratory resuscitation as needed.

Therapeutic Class

Cough Suppressant

Storage Conditions
