Indications

Flubex is prescribed for various infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, including those resistant to penicillinase. Key uses include:

  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Treats conditions like boils, abscesses, eczema, acne, cellulitis, infected wounds, and burns.
  • Respiratory Tract Infections: Effective against pneumonia, lung abscess, empyema, sinusitis, and pharyngitis.
  • Other Infections: Manages osteomyelitis, endocarditis, urinary tract infections, and meningitis. Also used prophylactically in major surgeries, such as cardiothoracic and orthopedic procedures.

Pharmacology

Flucloxacillin is a penicillinase-resistant antibiotic effective against Gram-positive organisms. It disrupts bacterial cell wall synthesis by inhibiting transpeptidase enzymes, which are crucial for cell wall stability. This action weakens the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell rupture. Flucloxacillin is resistant to penicillinase due to its structural modifications.

Dosage

  • Oral: Adults take 250 mg four times daily, with possible increase in severe infections (up to 8 g/day). Children’s doses are adjusted by age.
  • Parenteral: For adults and elderly, options include intramuscular and intravenous injections, with dosage based on infection severity. Children receive reduced doses.

Administration

  • Oral: Take 1 hour before meals.
  • IV: Dilute and administer as per guidelines for intermittent or continuous infusion.
