Pharmacology
Clobetasol Propionate is a highly potent topical corticosteroid known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-itch, and vasoconstrictive properties. It works by inhibiting allergic reactions, reducing mast cell density, and suppressing cytokine production.
Dosage
For creams and ointments, apply a thin layer to affected areas twice daily, gently rubbing it in. Short courses may be repeated as needed. For scalp applications, apply once or twice daily, ensuring not to exceed the prescribed weekly dose.
Administration
Administer topically. Creams are suitable for moist areas, while ointments are preferable for dry or scaly lesions.
Interaction
Certain medications (e.g., ritonavir, itraconazole) may inhibit corticosteroid metabolism, increasing systemic exposure.
Contraindications
Avoid use on rosacea, acne vulgaris, perioral dermatitis, and primary cutaneous viral infections. Not recommended for infants under one year or in fungal or bacterial skin infections.
Side Effects
Potential side effects include skin thinning, striae, and superficial blood vessel dilation with prolonged use. Discontinue use if hypersensitivity reactions occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy or lactation should be considered only if benefits outweigh risks.
Precautions
Long-term use should be minimized, especially in children, to avoid adrenal suppression. Avoid use on the face for extended periods.
Use in Special Populations
Special caution is advised in infants and children under 12 due to heightened susceptibility to atrophic changes.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C, protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
