Indications

Live Pharmacy is recommended for adults and children over 12 years to effectively alleviate constipation and treat chronic constipation. It is also effective in resolving fecal impaction, characterized by difficult bowel movements with rectal and colon blockage.

Composition

Each 25 ml concentrated oral solution contains:

• Polyethylene Glycol 3350: 13.125 gm
• Sodium Chloride: 350.7 mg
• Sodium Bicarbonate: 178.5 mg
• Potassium Chloride: 46.6 mg

Each sachet (Powder for Suspension) contains:

• Polyethylene Glycol 3350: 13.125 gm
• Sodium chloride: 350.7 mg
• Sodium Bicarbonate: 178.5 mg
• Potassium Chloride BP 46.6 mg

Pharmacology

Polyethylene Glycol 3350 (Macrogol) exerts an osmotic action in the intestines, acting as a laxative. It increases stool volume, enhancing colon motility through neuromuscular pathways. Electrolytes in combination with Macrogol are exchanged across the intestinal mucosa without net gain or loss of sodium, potassium, or water. Macrogol is minimally absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract.

Dosage & Administration

For adults and children aged 12 years and above (Powder for Suspension):

• Constipation: Initially, take 1 sachet daily, adjustable to 2-3 sachets if needed.
• Fecal Impaction: Take 8 sachets within 6 hours. Treatment typically does not exceed 3 days.
• No dosage adjustment needed for patients with renal insufficiency.

For adults and children aged 12 years and above (Oral Solution):

• Constipation: Initially, mix 25 ml of solution with 100 ml of water daily, adjustable to 2-3 doses if necessary.
• Fecal Impaction: Take 8 doses of 25 ml daily. Treatment typically does not exceed 3 days.

Interaction

During use, there is a possibility of transiently reducing the absorption of other medications. Some reports suggest decreased efficacy with certain concomitant medications such as anti-epileptics.

Contraindications

Avoid use in cases of intestinal obstruction, severe inflammatory conditions of the intestinal tract (e.g., Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), and hypersensitivity to active ingredients.

Side Effects

Generally well-tolerated, potential side effects include allergic reactions, electrolyte disturbances (e.g., hyperkalemia, hypokalemia), abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, and peripheral edema.

Pregnancy & Lactation

No adverse effects during pregnancy or breastfeeding are anticipated, as systemic exposure to Macrogol (3350) is minimal.

Precautions & Warnings

Use with caution in patients with impaired cardiovascular function. Prolonged use of laxatives, including Live Pharmacy, should be avoided as it may lead to dependence.

Overdose Effects

In case of severe symptoms like pain or distention, nasogastric aspiration may be necessary. Correct electrolyte disturbances caused by extensive fluid loss due to diarrhea or vomiting.
