Indications
Germicord is recommended for preventing omphalitis (infection of the umbilical cord) in newborns.
Pharmacology
Chlorhexidine, a broad-spectrum biocide, is effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi. It exhibits both bacteriostatic and bactericidal properties, depending on concentration, and kills by disrupting cell membranes. In vitro studies show Chlorhexidine can eliminate nearly 100% of these bacteria within 30 seconds. Its ability to destroy a wide range of microbes minimizes the risk of opportunistic infections. Chlorhexidine binds strongly to the skin due to its cationic nature. Data on topical use in neonates is limited, and there is no information on its metabolism following topical application.
Dosage
Topical Solution:
- Immediately after cutting the cord, apply 7.1% Chlorhexidine Gluconate solution to the tip, stump, and base of the umbilical cord.
Topical Gel:
- Apply 3 grams of gel once daily for seven days, following local umbilical cord care guidelines.
- For infants born before 32 weeks gestation or weighing less than 1.5 kg at birth, apply a single 3-gram dose within 24 hours of birth.
- Clean the umbilical cord stump and surrounding skin with a dry cloth before applying the gel. Ensure the entire umbilical cord is covered from the cut surface to the base. Wash hands before and after use.
- Do not use Chlorhexidine Gluconate gel with other products or occlusive dressings to avoid increased absorption through the skin.
