Indications
Prophylaxis and treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, including hay fever, and non-allergic (vasomotor) rhinitis. Also used to prevent recurrence of nasal polyps following surgical removal.
Pharmacology
Beclomethasone Dipropionate produces anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictor effects upon topical administration into the nasal mucosa. Its exact mechanism involves reductions in various inflammatory mediators and cellular activities.
Dosage
For adults, typically 2 sprays (50 µgm/spray) in each nostril twice daily, but some may prefer 1 spray in each nostril 3 to 4 times daily. Children (6 to 12 years) usually require 1 spray in each nostril twice daily, while those with severe symptoms may need 2 sprays in each nostril twice daily.
Administration
Shake the bottle gently, remove the dust cover, and prime the pump if necessary. Insert the nasal applicator into one nostril and spray while inhaling. Repeat for the other nostril.
Contraindications
Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any components of the formulation should avoid its use.
Side Effects
Rare instances of nasal septum perforation, dryness, irritation, unpleasant taste, smell, and epistaxis have been reported.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Beclomethasone should be used during pregnancy if benefits outweigh risks. Caution is advised during lactation due to potential excretion in human milk.
Precautions & Warnings
Care must be taken while transferring patients from systemic steroids to Beclometasone Nasal spray if adrenal function is impaired.
Overdose Effects
Excessive doses may suppress hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) function. Treatment should be continued at recommended doses, and HPA function typically recovers within one or two days.
