Indications
- Bronchospasm: The Sultolin Inhaler is prescribed for managing or preventing bronchospasm associated with bronchial asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema.
- Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm: It’s also effective in relieving acute dyspnea episodes and can be used prophylactically before physical exertion to prevent exercise-induced asthma attacks.
Pharmacology
- Salbutamol, a selective β2-adrenoceptor agonist, acts primarily on bronchial smooth muscle β2-adrenoceptors, offering short-acting bronchodilation within 5 minutes of administration. Additionally, it exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the release of bronchoconstrictor mediators like histamine and prostaglandin D2 from mast cells.
Dosage
- For acute bronchospasm relief, adults can take 1 or 2 puffs as needed, up to 8 puffs within 24 hours. Children should take half the adult dose.
- To prevent allergen- or exercise-induced bronchospasm, adults can take 2 puffs 15 minutes before exposure, up to 4 times daily. Children should take half the adult dose.
- For chronic therapy, adults and children can take up to 200 mcg (2 puffs) four times daily.
Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions.
Administration
Proper inhaler technique is crucial for effective medication delivery. Follow these steps for optimal use:
- Remove the cap and shake the inhaler vigorously.
- If the inhaler is new or hasn’t been used for a week, prime it by releasing one puff into the air.
- Breathe out fully, then hold the inhaler upright.
- Place the mouthpiece between your teeth and close your lips.
- Inhale deeply and slowly while pressing down firmly on the canister.
- Hold your breath for at least 10 seconds, then exhale slowly.
- Wait 1 minute between puffs if prescribed multiple doses.
- After use, replace the cap and rinse your mouth with water.
Interaction
Avoid concomitant use of Sultolin with non-selective beta-blocking drugs like propranolol to prevent potential hypokalemia. Monitor serum potassium levels in patients with acute severe asthma receiving concurrent treatment with xanthine derivatives or steroids.
Contraindications
Salbutamol Inhaler is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any of its components.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include tremors, anxiety, headache, and palpitations. Mouth and throat irritation may occur. If any adverse reactions persist or worsen, consult your healthcare provider.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if benefits outweigh risks. Exercise caution when administering to nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Be aware of potential paradoxical bronchospasm or cardiovascular effects. Discontinue use if immediate hypersensitivity reactions occur. Use with caution in patients with underlying cardiovascular disorders, convulsive disorders, hyperthyroidism, or diabetes mellitus.
Use in Special Populations
The safety and effectiveness of Sultolin Inhaler in children aged 4 years and older have been established.
