Indications
Dexonex-C is prescribed for a range of eye conditions including acute purulent conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, allergic conjunctivitis, iritis, and uveitis. It’s also used for certain ear infections such as otitis externa and otitis media.
Pharmacology
Dexamethasone, a glucocorticoid, possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties. Chloramphenicol, a bacteriostatic antibiotic, targets a wide array of gram-negative and gram-positive organisms by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.
Dosage & Administration
For bacterial conjunctivitis, administer 1-2 drops every 2 hours for 2 days, then every 4 hours for the next 5 days. For corneal ulcers, apply 2 drops every 15 minutes for the first 6 hours, then adjust frequency based on response.
Interaction
Interaction may occur with anticoagulants like warfarin, reducing Chloramphenicol’s effectiveness. Concomitant use with phenobarbital can inhibit Chloramphenicol’s action.
Contraindications
Avoid in herpes simplex cornealis, fungal, viral, and tuberculous eye infections, as well as in glaucoma and myelosuppression with prior Chloramphenicol exposure.
Side Effects
Adverse effects include ocular discomfort, redness, itching, photophobia, and elevated intraocular pressure. Prolonged use may lead to cataract formation and glaucoma.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy or lactation should be carefully considered based on potential benefits versus risks.
Precautions & Warnings
Monitor for fungal infections with prolonged corticosteroid use. Long-term antibiotic use may result in non-susceptible organism overgrowth.
Therapeutic Class
Ophthalmic steroid-antibiotic combined preparations.
Storage Conditions
Store in a cool, dry place away from light, and discard after 30 days of opening. Keep out of reach of children.
