Indications
Halobet 0.05% offers potent relief for the inflammatory and pruritic symptoms of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses. Treatment should not exceed two consecutive weeks, and a maximum weekly dosage of 50 gm is advised to prevent potential suppression of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis.
Pharmacology
Halobetasol propionate, a topical corticosteroid, exhibits anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties. While the exact mechanism of action remains unclear, it is believed to involve the induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, controlling the synthesis of inflammation mediators.
Dosage & Administration
Apply a thin layer of Halobetasol Cream or Ointment to affected skin once or twice daily as prescribed, gently massaging it in. Treatment should not exceed two weeks, and amounts over 50 gm/week are not recommended. Discontinue therapy upon achieving control, and if no improvement is seen within 2 weeks, reassessment may be necessary. Avoid using Halobetasol with occlusive dressings.
Contraindications
Halobetasol Propionate Cream/Ointment is contraindicated in individuals with a hypersensitivity history to any components of the preparation.
Side Effects
Adverse effects such as burning, itching, dryness, folliculitis, acne, hypopigmentation, and others have been infrequently reported with topical corticosteroids.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy requires careful consideration of potential benefits versus risks. While systemic absorption’s impact on breastfeeding is uncertain, caution is advised when administering topical corticosteroids to nursing women.
Precautions & Warnings
Systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids may lead to reversible HPA axis suppression, cushing’s syndrome manifestations, and other effects. Monitoring for HPA axis suppression is recommended for patients receiving large doses or under occlusive dressings.
Use in Special Populations
Caution is advised in pediatric use, as children under 12 may be at greater risk of HPA axis suppression. Safety and efficacy in this population have not been established.
Therapeutic Class
Belonging to the category of Other Topical Corticosteroids, Halobet offers targeted relief for dermatological conditions.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C, and ensure all medications are kept out of reach of children.
