Indications
This combination cream is indicated for various skin conditions where bacterial infections are present or anticipated, including primary irritant dermatitis, contact allergic dermatitis, eczema (such as atopic, infantile, discoid, and stasis), and seborrheic dermatitis.
Pharmacology
The cream contains Fusidic Acid BP 2% and Hydrocortisone Acetate BP 1%, offering potent antibacterial action along with anti-inflammatory and anti-pruritic effects. Fusidic Acid effectively targets Staphylococci, Streptococci, Corynebacteria, Neisseria, as well as certain Clostridia and Bacteroides, inhibiting protein synthesis in microorganisms. Hydrocortisone, a natural glucocorticosteroid, primarily reduces skin inflammation and possesses immunosuppressant and anti-mitotic properties.
Dosage & Administration
For adults, apply the cream three times daily, gently massaging it onto affected areas for a duration of two weeks. Consider a shorter course if symptoms improve. Not recommended for children under three years old.
Interaction
While Fusidic Acid may potentially inhibit the metabolism of certain drugs if absorbed systemically, no evidence supports this claim. No hazardous drug interactions have been reported with topical Hydrocortisone Acetate.
Contraindications
This preparation is contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to Fusidic Acid, Hydrocortisone Acetate, or other cream components. Avoid use in bacterial infections caused by non-susceptible organisms, fungal infections, skin tuberculosis, syphilitic skin infections, chickenpox, post-vaccination eruptions, and viral skin diseases.
Side Effects
Reported side effects of Fusidic Acid are typically mild, including irritation at the application site. Hypersensitivity reactions are rare. Local adverse effects may include dryness, itching, burning, irritation, skin atrophy, telangiectasia, hypertrichosis, pigmentation changes, and secondary infection. Avoid applying to the face to prevent conditions like acne rosacea or perioral dermatitis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
The safety of Fusidic Acid and/or Hydrocortisone Acetate during pregnancy or lactation has not been established. Consideration of potential benefits versus risks to the fetus or nursing infant is necessary before use.
Precautions & Warnings
Avoid contact with the eyes due to potential conjunctival irritation by Fusidic Acid. Prolonged use under occlusive dressings or over large areas, especially on the face, scalp, axillae, and scrotum, may lead to systemic effects such as adrenal suppression.
Use in Special Populations
Clinical trials in children aged three and above have shown no increased incidence of adverse effects. Limited data are available for children under three.
