Indications

Doxacil effectively treats various infections caused by susceptible microorganisms, including respiratory tract infections like pneumonia, influenza, and sinusitis, gastrointestinal tract infections such as cholera and traveler’s diarrhea, chlamydial infections like lymphogranuloma venereum, and sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea and syphilis. It also addresses other infections like impetigo, furunculosis, and conjunctivitis.

Description

Doxacil, a potent broad-spectrum antibiotic of the tetracycline group, combats a wide array of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, spirochetes, mycoplasma, rickettsia, and mycobacteria. It serves as an alternative to penicillin in treating gonorrhea and syphilis, exerting its primary action on protein synthesis inhibition within bacterial cells.

Pharmacology

Doxycycline Hydrochloride, a semisynthetic tetracycline antibiotic, exhibits bacteriostatic properties with broad-spectrum activity. It effectively targets organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, and Chlamydia, among others. Doxycycline proves particularly beneficial for infections like acne, urinary tract infections, and sexually transmitted diseases.

Dosage

For most infections, the standard dosage of Doxacil is 200 mg on the first day, followed by 100 mg daily for 7-10 days. In severe infections, including refractory urinary tract infections, a dosage of 200 mg daily for 10 days is recommended. Acne treatment typically involves a daily dosage of 100 mg.

Administration

Doxacil capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing to ensure proper absorption.

Interaction

Various substances like antacids, iron-containing preparations, and barbiturates may interfere with the absorption of doxycycline. Caution is advised when using doxycycline concurrently with oral contraceptives or anticoagulant therapy.

Contraindications

Doxycycline is contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to tetracyclines, children under 8 years of age, pregnant women, and lactating mothers.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Doxacil may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, and hemolytic anemia.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Doxycycline should be avoided during pregnancy due to potential risks to fetal development and should not be used by lactating mothers as it enters breast milk.

Precautions & Warnings

The use of doxycycline during tooth development (up to the age of 8 years) may cause permanent discoloration of teeth. Therefore, it should be avoided in this age group.
